In addition to Display Areas, our Museum is a working facility. We have a laboratory where trained volunteers clean, repair, reconstruct, and otherwise preserve fossils and other articles of natural history.

Would you like to know more about local fossils, including fossils of sea lions, sharks, and other animals and plants that inhabited Kern County when Bakersfield was at the edge of the Pacific Ocean? Come to one of the Buena Vista Museum paleontology workshops and learn about these fossils.

Students and volunteers have joined our museum to study and save our Kern County fossil heritage, which is preserved in the Sharktooth Hill bonebed. The bonebed is a layer of rock that lies at the surface of the Earth a few miles northeast of Bakersfield. Phenomenal marine Miocene mammal fossils have come from the bonebed. Participants will actually work the enclosing rock to uncover and identify these fossils.

The Paleo Workshop is a fantastic educational opportunity for everyone who enjoys science- a background in science studies is not necessary. These daylong workshops, usually held on a Saturday, are designed to 1) introduce the attendees to California's fascinating geology and Earth history in general, and 2) help them find and identify local fossils, such as shark's teeth, and skeletal remains of whales, sea lions, rays and skates, and sea turtles.

Upon completion of the Paleo Workshop, you will have learned how to restore and preserve fossils. You will receive a Certificate of Participation and be allowed to volunteer in the Museum's paleontology restoration lab. Experienced volunteers may be invited to field paleontologic training held on Sharktooth Hill.

Contact us and learn how you, too, can share in the educational opportunities and the excitement of fossils.
