Nearly all specimens of petrified wood are cross-sections of limbs and trunks. These full rounds, are highly polished to aid identification by showing growth rings and other patterns of internal structure. These woods are up to 375 million years old and were collected throughout the United States. One display case is devoted to Kern County petrified woods.

Also on display, are coals and carbon rich impressions of ancient land plants. Fronds of tree ferns and other gymnosperms and land plants dating back nearly 400 million years provide a glimpse into the past.
