![]() ROCKS AND MINERALS ![]() The Museum exhibits outstanding colorful and educational rock and mineral displays. Explanations of what rocks, minerals and crystals are and where they can be found, aid the visitor. The rocks are a hands-on exhibit. Visitors can feel the texture and see the colors as they closely examine 14 specimens from the three basic types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Minerals are organized according to traditional mineral classifications (i.e. carbonates, silicates, sulfides, etc.) On display, are locally found specimens, such as those from the world famous U.S. Borax Open Pit Mine in eastern Kern County. Minerals from locations worldwide also make up the approximately 75 specimens on display. Large labels detail the formation, uniqueness and importance of some minerals to our society. A display of fluorescent minerals is currently under construction.
