SABERTOOTH CATS

The "saber-toothed tiger," Smilodon, is the California State Fossil and the
second most common fossil mammal found in the La Brea tar pits. Sabertooth cats had enlarged upper canines, some up to 18 centimeters
(7 inches) long. The most likely reason for these enlarged teeth was
increased hunting ability. Another possibility is they used them as a
social display structure, like most horns and antlers. This lends
support to the idea that sabertooths were indeed social animals.
