SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS AND CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS

CLASSROOM TOURS TO THE MUSEUM:

School groups, clubs and organizations are invited to tour the museum at special group rates. Reduced rates are available for groups of 20 or more and reservations are required. Tours outside regular museum hours are available.

The museum displays the remains of sharks that ranged from 6 inches to 60 feet long. The displays include fossils of ancestral sea lions, dolphins, whales, dugongs, and other marine mammals. Turtles, crocodiles, and a variety of seabirds are also represented.

Terrestrial fossils on display from the Bonebed include ancestral horse, rhino, camel, deer, and elephant. Plant fossils include wood, pine cones, and nuts.

The museum is the repository of the Bob and Mary Ernst Collection of Kern County Miocene marine life. The collection includes most of the Miocene fossils on display.

The museum also houses educational collections of petrified wood, rocks, and minerals, most from the western United States. These materials are displayed in conjunction with the Kern County Mineral Society.

Native American artifacts, with an emphasis on the local group, the Yokuts, are also on display. The Yokuts occupied the San Joaquin Valley for at least 10,000 years. Our collection includes Yokuts points, baskets and other artifacts, as well as artifacts of other nearby Native American groups.

An Animal Discovery Center takes visitors through a path of increasingly complex animals, with many hands-on exhibits.

Our modern animal collection also includes mounts from Africa, North America, and other continents.

The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History will enlighten and entertain your class for 1 to 2 hours. Field trips include both a docent-led explanation of the exhibits, and a hands on experience in our learning center.

TRAVELING CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS:

Our traveling programs are staffed by trained docents, ready to come to your location to give an exciting and educational presentation. We can give presentations on the Indians that lived here in the San Joaquin Valley or we offer a variety of programs that present natural history of Kern County. These programs can include geology, paleontology, biology and anthropology. These displays feature fossils and artifacts that are found in our area!

Let the Museum bring the enjoyment of our displays to your classroom. Each presentation lasts 1 hour and costs $45.00 per classroom. The programs begin with a lecture style presentation, lead into an exploration of hand on materials, and conclude with a question and answer session (10 minutes). We offer a variety of programs that present information and relate it to the natural history of Kern County for:

  • Geology - rocks, minerals, and landforms
  • Paleontology - featuring Kern County's ancient vertebrates
  • Biology - local flora and fauna
  • Anthropology - Yokuts and other tribes
